112 Screen Free Activities Based On Your Personal Interests

It has become so normal to use screens at all times of the day nowadays.

Whether you’re having a meal, waiting at the bus stop, or on the toilet (a whopping 80-90% Brits under the age of 30 do this!), screens are everywhere now.

Of course, while screens/ the internet have numerous benefits in that you can now connect with your loved ones across the globe or learn about things you would have had trouble finding books about, constantly being on screens has also negatively affected people’s mental health.

The UK is now actively pressing social media companies to set a stronger age limit on its users, as well as many other countries around the world, due to the spike in mental health issues and sadly, fatalities.

With the advent of AI, this will affect even more people.

Despite this, I am not a ‘screen hater.’ I can connect to you guys from all across the world because of a screen, and I’ve found so many new interests that have now become important in my life because I watched other people do it.

The keyword here is – balance.

Rather than making social media your pseudo-virtual life, you need to live your real life and use screens as a supplement to it, as basically an activity that you use for fun, but does not take over your real life.

But your real life is work and school, you say. And screens are that enjoyment/ fun activity you get away from real life.

It is important to have interests and hobbies for yourself, not attached to anything else.

That means outside of work and responsibilities, working on your personal development – your likes, hobbies, interests, goals, passions, understanding of yourself and the world around you etc.

When you are firm in your beliefs and opinions, you will find peace in yourself that no amount of screentime can ever give you.

Fun Screen free things to do

If you’re struggling to find screen free things to do, or you get bored and don’t know what to do when you’re not using screens, choose something that interests you (even if slightly) on this list of screen free activities.

Many people claim that they don’t what else to do apart from using social media, but there is sooooooo much to do.

You’re just not used to it, and that’s fine. Using screens has become a habit and it’s hard to slowly let go of an old habit and start a new one.

But the more you try things, the more you’ll figure out what you like and what you don’t.

Soon, you’ll probably even want to do a screen free activity over using your phone as you come to realise just how fulfilling it is to pick up a new skill or discover a new part of yourself.

Painting is a screen free activity I’ve returned to in the past couple of years, and it has brought me so much self-satisfaction and fulfilment that no amount of screen time would. Every time I put my ideas on the page, I feel a part of me internally release. It’s like journaling but with colour. I’ve also now got an Etsy small business because of this interest, something I never thought would happen.

May include: A blue and white poster with a drawing of a plate of food. The food is a fish with rice and potatoes. The poster has the text "Ilish" and the Bengali word for "Ilish" in large letters.

May include: A rectangular poster with a light green checkered background featuring the text "today's pickings from the বাগান". It displays illustrations of tomatoes, bottle gourd, chilli, aubergine, hyacinth beans, radish, and scotch bonnet with labels.

‘Today’s pickings from the Bagan’ print – my ‘screen free’ activity I love to do!

But hey-ho, that’s what happens when you get off the screen and do something for yourself.

Don’t let unchecked screen usage be the reason why you never achieved that goal of yours.
